Morpeth Lions join GMDT on their 1st litter blitz
Sunday 11 th February was a fine, if cold, day unlike the previous wet one. This was particularly fortuitous as 4 Morpeth Lions and two wives joined 12 other people for Greater Morpeth Development Trust’s (GMDT) 1 st Litter Blitz tackling litter ‘hot spots’ in the town.

Within one and a half hours the team had collected 28 bags of assorted rubbish and created a large pile of other detritus too large to be carried away. This was subsequently removed the next day by Northumberland County Council (NCC) teams.
This venture was a joint exercise between GMDT, Morpeth Lions and other local litter groups. Over the following few months various areas will be targeted; the next one being in the Stobhill area on March 4 th as part of the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign.
The initiative has had great support from the NCC environment team who provide bags, gloves, goggles and an 8’ litterpicker.
Such is the team’s enthusiasm that this first ‘blitz’ took place on one of the Lion’s birthday. Well done to all involved!
